Love Letter to Life 08.29.2026 An Equation

Dear Life, This “equation” hangs on my studio wall: Heart + Inspiration = New Work. I painted the small, tempera heart in 1991 and it recently surfaced when I opened up a tablet of paper. It had been hiding. The magazine tear-out was discovered while looking for collage material. In it is a painting that inspires me. Another magazine piece offers a beautiful landscape that has the word AUTUMN on it. This is creative juice for a series of acrylic paintings on birch panels that are still blank. Math and Art sparking Joy.

Love Letter to Life 08.28.26 The Creative Act

Dear Life, I am re-reading Rick Rubin’s book, “The Creative Act: A Way of Being”. Rick is an acclaimed music producer/musician and a practicing Buddhist. There are days I have woken up and thought, “What the ?x#k am I doing”. I imagine many of us have asked this question. It is a pleasure to come across a fellow traveler “who reframes creativity not as a rare talent, but as a fundamental way of living and relating to the world”. I highly recommend the read if you are at all interested in the creative life.

Love Letter to Life 08.26.2026 And It Begins

Dear Life, So good to be back in my campus studio and start a new series of watercolors. I am grateful for the simple lesson learned over years of practice: bring the body and the mind will follow. Sometimes my mind is way too noisy about life. Work quiets it, thankfully! Sit at the table, open up the paints, pick up a brush, and land on the paper. Magic happens!

Love Letter to Life 08.16.26 Family

Dear Life, I look at all the photos of family and friends in CT and feel joy. There’s been many wonderful gatherings over meals, picnics, going to the beach, theater, museums, visiting studios, music, bike races and playing card games nightly. Laughter with my siblings, their spouses, my daughter, my grandkids, nieces and their husbands and their kids. My heart is full of love and gratitude. And the happiness of winning at cards tonight!

Love Letter to Life 08.14.2026 NYC & BPT

Dear Life, Having a great time visiting with friends in NYC and CT. Jay Dee Daugherty met Arlene and I in NYC. Walked through MOMA and had dinner. Saw a Broadway play. Pure fun. Visited the renovated factory buildings in Bridgeport. Impressive studios, restaurants, and art businesses bringing the neighborhoods to life. Had lunch at the harbor with a friend, John Bygott, who I met in Santa Fe. He tried to sell me the idea to move back to CT. If only I could live in both places!

Love Letter to Life 08.12.2026 The Crew

Dear Life, Spent the day on a friend’s sailboat off the shore of CT. A mix of sun and clouds, little wind so we motored for the afternoon. Ate sandwiches, chips and chocolate chip cookies. Had fun visiting with Tracy, my daughter, Christopher, my grandson and Chuck the Captain, a friend. Good to be where I grew up and in the elements of New England.
Sun and Sea. Happy.

Love Letter to Life 08.09.2026 Sister, Daughter, Mother

Dear Life, This photo was taken yesterday of my sister Arlene, my daughter Tracy, and me. Tracy and I were separated after her birth in 1968. Then a miracle happened on 01.14.20. We reunited through Ancestry: DNA confirmed a mother-daughter match. It was the same day I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lymphoma. Due to Covid travel restrictions and my cancer treatments, we couldn’t meet in-person until 2021. Our love and family circle keeps expanding. Love heals.

Love Letter to Life 08.06.2026 Home Away From Home

Dear Life, After a day of travel, I arrived in CT. Laughed with my sister and brother-in-law over dinner while telling them adventure stories: falling on the up escalator in Dallas Airport while rushing to make connection (thank you, Angel Chad, who helped me stand up and together), the Rental Car shuttle driving so far through Astoria, Queens, I thought I was getting kidnapped, and then me taking my rental car, ZIA SOUL, through the carwash at the pick-up lot because it had bird poop all over it. A worker ran over and said, “You can’t do that!” Well, I already had and the car was now clean. A necessity. Welcome Home!
